Heroin Addiction: Heroin Detox
Heroin is a stronger version of morphine. It is a highly addictive and dangerous drug.
Heroin addiction is a serious disease. Once addicted to heroin, any attempts to reduce intake or eliminate usage can throw the body into withdrawal.
Withdrawal symptoms can be very vicious. For heroin users withdrawal symptoms can include nausea, body aches, and abdominal cramping. The common withdrawal terms of “going cold turkey” and ‘kicking the habit” originated from common heroin withdrawal side effects of gooseflesh and restless leg. In some cases, attempting to go through withdrawal without medical supervision can be life-threatening.
Fortunately, there are treatments available to help people that are dealing with an Heroin addiction. Rapid detox at ODI (Opiate Detoxification Institute) consists of a two week program during which a patient undergoes a medical procedure under brief general anesthesia, followed by a 3-4 day hospital stay to assist in further recovery. Treatment is rendered under the care of board certified anesthesiologists, pain management specialists and psychiatrists.
