Intravenous
The definition for intravenous is literally “within a vein.” Intravenous is commonly used to refer to Intravenous (IV) therapy. IV therapy is administering liquid substances directly into a vein. It can be done intermittently, via needle, or continuously, via an IV drip. An IV pump is used to regulate the volume and speed of delivery of substances via an IV drip.
IV therapy is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications throughout the body. Some medications as well as some medical procedures, such as blood transfusions, can only be administered intravenously.
