Women and Addiction

Today we know that when a woman abuses alcohol or other drugs, the risk to her health is much greater than it is for a man. Yet there is not enough prevention, intervention, or treatment targeting women. It is still much harder for women to get help. That needs to change.”

- Former First Lady Betty Ford, April 1995

Women face more challenges than men do in dealing with addiction. Research has shown that social disapproval is stronger toward addicted women than addicted men. As a result, the fear of discovery for an addicted woman is far greater than for a man. Common fears include personal ridicule, family embarrassment, and rejection by significant others. Many more men abandon their addicted partners than do women. Women also fear separation from their children. Women face additional challenges in obtaining treatment because, frequently, child care is not available and women tend not to have a family support system behind them.

At ODI, we are very sensitive to the unique needs of our women patients. The ODI difference is our personal relationship with each of our patients. We know addiction is a serious illness that needs to be treated with understanding, clinical excellence and total confidentiality. The comprehensive ‘Executive-level’ physical that is part of our program investigates and addresses, as needed, the special heath risks that women face from addiction. ODI physicians and therapists work with each patient to develop a personalized after-care maintenance plan that addresses her physical, mental, and emotional needs in transitioning to an opiate-free life. We are strongly committed to helping each of our patients succeed in their rehabilitation.
